Measurements guide the estimate

Choose the right project scope

Install the paper. Get the wall ready.

Wallpaper needs a sound, suitable surface. Tell me what is on the wall now and what condition it is in. I’ll review the project and include any agreed removal or preparation work in the estimate.

Have a product picked out? Share its name or link. Still deciding? I can help narrow down the style and work out a starting material quantity once we know the wall sizes and paper details.

Paste-the-wall wallpaper

For wallpaper designed to be installed by applying paste to the wall. Product instructions and wall condition matter.

Peel-and-stick wallpaper

A self-adhesive option for suitable surfaces. We’ll consider the product guidance and wall finish before installation.

Removal and surface preparation

Existing paper removal, patching, smoothing, or other prep can be discussed and scoped for your walls.

Materials, without the guesswork

Bring your wallpaper—or get help choosing.

If you already have the rolls, share the product details. If not, tell me the look you want and I can help compare options and estimate quantity. Final quantity depends on roll dimensions, pattern repeat, usable coverage, and the measured walls.

Wallpaper 101

A beginner’s guide to choosing, measuring, and planning

Wallpaper is not one-size-fits-all. The backing, application method, pattern, and wall condition affect both the material count and installation plan. Use this as a starting point; the wallpaper and adhesive instructions for your specific products take priority.

1. Know what kind of wallpaper you have

Before buying paste or planning the job, find the product name or label and confirm its required application method.

Paste-the-wall

Apply compatible adhesive to the wall, but only when the paper is designed for this method.

Paste-the-paper

Apply adhesive to the paper. Some products need “booking” time before hanging; follow the label.

Pre-pasted

The backing has adhesive that must be activated as directed, usually with water or an approved activator.

Peel-and-stick

Self-adhesive paper needs a clean, dry, smooth, compatible surface. Texture and fresh paint can affect adhesion.

Murals are usually panel-based. Check the panel order, finished dimensions, and supplier’s measuring tool rather than treating a mural like a standard roll.

2. Measure each wall carefully

  • Sketch the room and label each wall. Measure each one separately.
  • Measure width and height in more than one place; note the largest dimensions if walls or ceilings vary.
  • Write down doors, windows, corners, outlets, fixtures, built-ins, and anything that affects access.
  • Do not subtract every opening automatically. A window may interrupt a strip without eliminating a full strip or its pattern waste.
  • For murals, use the maker’s directions for maximum wall width and height. Some made-to-measure suppliers include their own fitting margin.

3. Estimate rolls by strips—not area alone

  1. Divide each wall’s width by the wallpaper’s usable width and round up to get the number of vertical strips.
  2. Set each strip length from the wall height plus trimming allowance. Pattern repeats may require longer cuts.
  3. Divide the product’s roll length by the cut length and round down to find full strips per roll.
  4. Divide total strips by usable strips per roll and round up. Confirm how the product is packaged and sold.
Simple example—no pattern repeat: A 10-foot-wide by 8-foot-high wall needs six 20-inch-wide strips. With 2 inches extra at the top and bottom, each cut is about 100 inches. A 33-foot roll yields three full cuts, so plan for about two rolls’ worth before corner allowances, defects, or packaging differences.

4. Pattern repeats change the math

A pattern repeat is the distance before the design starts again. A match type tells you how neighboring strips line up—commonly random, straight, or drop match. Larger repeats and offset matches can create substantially more offcuts, so a square-foot estimate may undercount what you need.

Check the repeat and match on the product listing, then use the maker’s roll calculator when available. Buy enough from the same dye lot or run when possible, and inspect the rolls before cutting.

5. Murals can waste less—but still need allowance

A made-to-measure mural is commonly supplied as numbered panels forming one larger image, so there is less waste from repeating a motif than with repeating wallpaper. There can still be trimming, panel alignment, uneven walls, and damaged or unusable sections to consider.

Follow that mural supplier’s exact measuring and ordering instructions. Some add a fit margin themselves; adding another allowance without checking could make the mural too large.

6. Get the wall ready

  • Start with a surface that is clean, dry, smooth, and sound.
  • Address loose paint, old adhesive, holes, rough spots, and active moisture before hanging.
  • Use primer or sizing only as appropriate for the wall and wallpaper system.
  • Let new paint and repairs cure as long as the wallpaper and adhesive instructions require.
  • Peel-and-stick products can be especially sensitive to texture, dust, humidity, and uncured paint.

7. Plan the install before the first strip

  1. Inspect the paper, pattern, color, and lot numbers before cutting.
  2. Choose a starting point and plan where seams, corners, and focal patterns will land.
  3. Set a straight vertical reference; do not assume a room corner is perfectly plumb.
  4. Apply adhesive or peel the backing only as directed, in a section you can hang while workable.
  5. Align the strip and match the pattern, smooth gently, trim with a sharp blade, and clean up only as the product allows.
  6. Allow the installation to dry or cure under the conditions specified by the product makers.

Common questions

Can you tell me how many rolls to buy?

Send the wall dimensions and the wallpaper product link or a photo of its label. Width, length, repeat, match type, and package size all affect the estimate.

Should I subtract doors and windows?

Record them, but do not subtract their area blindly. Their location may not reduce the number of full strips or the material needed to keep a pattern aligned.

Can you help choose and calculate the material?

Yes. You can provide the wallpaper or share the look you want; include your wall measurements and I can help review the product and estimate what to order.

Have a product picked out—or need help figuring out the quantity?

Send the wall details

Start with the details

Tell me about your wallpaper project.

Share the wall count, approximate measurements, paper type, and who is supplying the wallpaper. If a measurement or product is still unknown, you can say so.

Material note: Roll count is confirmed after reviewing the product width, length, pattern repeat, and wall measurements.

Wallpaper estimate details

Fields marked optional can be discussed later.

For more than 10 walls, describe them below.
Approximate size of each wall

Enter feet/inches if known. Measure each wall separately; skip any you have not measured yet.

Who will provide the wallpaper?
You can text photos after submitting your request; no photo upload is needed here.

Submitting does not lock in price or scope. Rob will confirm details before a job is booked.
